Before you download a mod

Check the source, supported game and installation instructions before opening a file.

This checklist covers PC mods in general. There are no GTA VI mod downloads on 6mods yet.

Check the game and version

Read the exact game, edition and version in the description. A “GTA 6” graphics mod for GTA V is still a GTA V mod.

Screenshots and videos do not prove that a download works. Check claims about unreleased games or tools against the publisher’s or developer’s website.

Find the original author

Download from the author’s release page or project repository. Re-uploaded files can be changed, outdated or missing instructions.

Read the release notes and recent issue reports. Popularity alone does not mean a file is safe.

Read the instructions

A release page should explain:

  • Which game versions the mod supports.
  • Which other tools or mods it needs.
  • Which files it adds or replaces.
  • How to install and remove it.
  • Any known conflicts or effects on saved games.

Check each required tool at its original source, too.

Watch for warning signs

Avoid downloads that ask for account passwords, surveys or unrelated browser extensions. Do not disable security software to run an unfamiliar installer.

Keep file extensions visible and scan downloads before opening them. A clean scan does not guarantee safety. Investigate any warnings before continuing.

Back up before installing

Back up saves and follow the tool’s instructions for keeping an unmodified installation. Add one mod at a time so problems are easier to trace.

Keep track of installed versions and how to remove each mod. Game updates can break compatibility, so check release notes before updating.

Check the publisher’s and multiplayer service’s rules before using mods online.
